Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

We've been there, to celebrate them: The Rolling Stones in Munich!

It was such a great show! A travel through time - and the Flying Dutchman and I enjoyed every minute.

First it seemed that we would not be able to go there: over Munich ramped and raged a storm rainfall. I said: "I won't go if that continues - even the Stones are not worth as much as my health."

The organisers posted that because of the rain the entry gates would be opened an hour later.

And suddenly the rain stopped, and the Flying Dutchman (for once much more optimistic than I) said: "Let's go - and when we are at the Olympia Stadion, we'll see if we want to go in or not."

(= "You can't always get what you want - but if you try some time - you get what you need!")

And so we did.

At the moment to use Underground and city railway in Munich is no joy - and that will remain so for the next five years - construction areas everywhere.

The 9 Euro-Ticket (I will write about that mad invention in another post) didn't help: more people on trains, busses and trams than ever. (Though it has funny aspects: the woman sitting beside me in the concert told me: "We came from Hamburg to Munich for 9 Euros - today! - and tonight we'll go back at 4 o'clock." You are allowed only to use the very slow trains - so they got very much travel for their money :-)

In the stadium: masses of people - many wearing T-shirts from older Stones-concerts, and lots of grey hair - but a third of the fans were really young (and NOT daughters or sons).

Munich's sky, which had sulked before, suddenly sent a beatyfying smile at the Stones when they started:

And Yours Truly sang for two hours with the wonderfully alive Stones - bliss!

And all evening it remained dry!

  1. To think life goes on, the Stones are touring! I am glad the rain stopped and you went and what a sensible Flying Dutchman. I only saw the Stones once, 40 years ago.

    1. Dear Rachel, yes, I was glad that we went! I once (upon a time) saw the Stones in Frankfurt - to think they still are so full of energy! Mick is 78, Keith Richards 78, Ron Wood 74 - really formidable! XXX

  2. I know they're good, but if I were a member (dream on) I think I'd stop now.

    1. No, though Mick cried out: "How I miss ye!!!", I was only a prominent background singer, part of the big chorus - but word-perfect!

  4. The Stones concert sounds like great fun and the weather cooperated making it perfect. Isn't it great that the concerts are back! Getting back our lives and doing beloved activities is such a gift.

    1. Yes, Susan - it was such a strange feeling to be for the first time among estimated 45.000 people - and we went very silent when they played "Living' in a Ghost Town" - we were so glad to be among people again. As you wrote: Getting our lives back.

  5. What a stage set. You know I've never been to a really large concert; I've been to sporting events with that number but never music. Must be fantastic.

    1. Yes, the stage set was gigantic. The really innovative architecture of the Olympic stadium - built in 1968 - 1972 - is still overwhelming. Only with the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg (finished in 2016) you find another modern spectacular building in Germany.

  6. How wonderful to see the Stones perform. I saw them in my not so big or important hometown of Akron, Ohio back in the sixties, when they were just out there.

    1. I believe, Joanne, that their music then was as infectious as it was now - maybe even more so.

  7. Oh, what a great night out! As much for the delight of the weather and travel gods making it possible as for the concert itself. I've never seen the Rolling Stones - their concert in the past here have cost $$$. We did see Gary Numan in concert some years back when he was in his 60s - there were three generations of fans in the audience that time! We sat up in the dress circle of the theatre with other oldies, some with walking sticks and needing assistance but still with their long grey rocker hair and black t-shirts :)

    1. Dear Pip, I haven't seen many rock-bands live in my life: 2 x the Stones, 2 x the Kinks, and later I saw Tina Turner.
So this was a real highlight.
Gary Numan I had to look at on Youtube - dark? The mixture of fans is really fascinating!

  8. It is amazing to think that The Stones have been performing now for over 60 years, and they seem to have still have the same energy and vitality. Glad the Flying Dutchman encouraged you to 'up sticks' and just go, it obviously gave you a really memorable evening.

    1. Dear Rosemary, I wondered too how alive they are! And thought if it was the right thing to live always so healthy as I tried to live - evidently the body forgives a lot...
Yes, I was glad that I followed him - and was rewarded.
