Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

Thing T. Thing - or: "Che Gelida Manina"

Brigitta Huegel

You know my enthusiasm for hats - the bigger, the better. (And I wear all of them, in real life).
And I had a shoe-tic, tamed by now (hahaha).
When I still wrote my blog "You are Witty and Pretty", I carried the torch for the fashionista - but soon I got bored tired by all these blogs counting up what they bought here, and then there, and you had not to be Einstein to calculate that their armoire, (never a simple cupboard), must be as big as our posh emporium KaDeWe in toto - and the blogger's gloves and scarves they had to put on the Tauentzien & Kudamm together for want of room.
So the "pretty" gave way to the "witty" - at least I tried, till at last I gave up.
But back to fashion:
I now add gloves (sort of) to my passions.
Aren't the lacy-ones above beautiful? (And practical: you still can write an SMS).
The painters and artists among you know: nothing is as difficult as drawing hands - and photographing them - on your own - isn't easy either. So please don't look with a too critical eye at the way my arm looks in the photo- and no, I didn't overdo my weight-training, I only stem the wall...
These one - manufactured by Karl Lagerfeld - were a present from my young Hamburgian friend:

When I wear them - especially in Hamburg, the city of the very mighty and very rich - some older gentle(?)men in Brioni-suits get a certain glitter in their eyes - as if Gabriella Cilmi sings in their mind  "Nothing's Sweet About Me".
So hastily I counter-trill from Puccini's La Bohème: "How icecold is this tiny hand" -
and wait for even colder days to carry my newest trove:

PS: As I joined Joanne Noragon's brand-new Facebook-site which shows the beautiful scarves she weaves, their might be a new mode en vogue for me...

  1. Your "hand garments" are most definitely eye-catching.

    1. Thank you, Emma - I love especially the lacey ones, together with something simple.

  2. I love all of your fingerless gloves Britta …. I have quite a few myself. If you look at my profile picture { that was taken at our son's wedding in 2008 } I have some on.
I, too, get a bit fed up with the perfect lives in Blogland !!!! XXXX

    1. Dear Jackie, your fingerless gloves on your profile look terrific - are the pearls part of the rim or is it a armlet on its own?

    2. The pearls were bracelets Britta that came with the necklace ….. I think that I went a bit over the top with them !!!! My sister bought me a pair of cream armlets with a lace trim from Sweden for my birthday this year. XXXX

  3. I actually have two pairs of fingerless gloves, but somehow I don't think they'd make the fashion circuit! (They are navy blue wool home-knitted.) They do, however, come in very handy when I want to read in bed, but my hands are cold if they're out from under the covers!

    1. Dear Sue, and nevertheless you read so much! I saw (with a glimmer of covetousness in my eyes) a pir of beautiful fur wristlets - but then I thought: Oh no - not another whim...

  4. My winter gloves are sleek and grey, with tiny, tiny bead work. And, oh, so warm. I bought them in desperation when I found I'd left my beautiful green wool gloves on a shop counter. Worse luck. I bought these in a hurry, and find them much admired. Who would guess.
Thank you for looking in on my little shop. Scarves are wonderful; may they not go from fashion too soon. I'm thinking a tube, next.

    1. Dear Joanne, beautiful and useful - that is the dream combination!
And yes: they show a tendency to get lost - in Hamburg I went up (no elevator) to our flat on the fifth's floor - saw that I had lost one glove - whoosh - down again (no fitness training centers necessary then) and bliss: it lay in front of the door...
Your scarves are really beautiful - I will add the link.

  5. My gloves are all heavy leather work gloves but "Per sogni e per chimere

    1. Dear Geo., a man will wear no-nonsense gloves, of course (except Mr. Lagerfeld, I think he covers up some age.spots). And I won my bet with husband - he had predicted that no man will put a comment on that topic. So: thank you twice!

  6. I too am devoted to gloves, including sort of gloves. Any new way to bring colour to an ensemble without making it look fussy is to be desired, and gloves do just that. I do love your lacy ones, just the thing for a very individual gentlewoman.

    1. Thank you, Mise - to the lacy ones I add a leather jacket so not to look too gentle. Like you I love a dash of surprise (in fashion and elsewhere), and humour.

  7. Welcome to Jeanne! I liked the photos from your trip to Germany very much.

  8. I wish now that I had worn gloves more often while out in the sunlight. I usually wore them in the garden but nowhere else. Now I have the brown spots to show for my carelessness:( I do adore those lace gloves, and I can see where they would look quite sporty with a leather coat.

  9. Dear Walk2write, I'm so glad to hear from you again!
Sunlight can even send its (harmful) rays through the windowpane of a car - but: I am not that into pickling oneself from head to toe in suncream (we need vitamin D too). Steering a middle course might be good - but if there are spots: what do you think why Mr. Lagerfeld wears his gloves?

    1. Hello, dear Suze - I wondered where you were! Thank you for the compliment (I've never stepped into a Nail Studio - and I seldom wear nail polish, have too many things to do with my hands.)
