Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

Loathing perfection, yet adoring beauty.

Yesterday I was very happy to be there in my flat in Bavaria when the carollers came along and blessed the house. Glued the blessing over my front door.

Later I choose a motto for 2025, a quote out of Nabil Fanous book "The Universal Rules of Life":

It is Rule 1:  "Do it now, perfect it later.

He meant me, I am quite sure. And of cause he is right: "Intentions aren't the same as action." So I spare you my New Year's resolutions. I have them - but if they only exist in my head or my heart I shall keep my mouth shut. (Haha - that's one of my New Year's resolutions: I talk too much - that takes away a lot of energy - mine, and that of others).

I always admire people in films: taciturn and wise they LISTEN to the other one and only utter one wise half-sentence in 15 minutes. My only excuse: I worked as a councillor - and in my long life I listened 30.000 hours (!) to 30.000 young people. Which I did with high interest, really - but after that I took a deep breath and started to talk more myself - and now I train myself to listen - again).

I wish all of you a good start in 2025!

  1. The only excuse I have for talking so much is that I like to talk. My worst habit is interrupting when someone else is speaking.

    1. Dear Mimmilynn, it is a joy to talk, I agree. A good conversation, a funny phrasing - that's why I also love to read a lot.

  2. That is very true. Intentions are easy to create, quick to inform people and largely admirable. Actions take effort and often money, and are not always applauded by others.

    1. True, dear Helen! Actions are also satisfying, and sometimes exhausting, but bring most often more results (though sometimes surprising ones).

  3. Best to keep resolutions to yourself. You will know how well you are succeeding.

    1. Dear Joanne, I also think it it better not to boast about intentions (or actions either).
Yet sometimes it it is good to share an intention with a good friend to be able to discuss it - and one feels more responsible to do it then.

  4. Wise resolutions for a new year.
I like what you write about the first step,
I believe the same, you have to start and then finish!!
Have a beautiful happy and lucky year.

    1. Thank you, dear Katerina! I wish you a beautiful and happy new year.
Intentions are sometimes a good way to put something one wishes to change or reach into words, to get the goal clear. And I am happy to find out at the end of a year which came true.

  5. I never make New Year resolutions Britta ..... I have never understood why January 1st is the day to make them ..... we are probably not in the right headspace to keep them at that particular time ! We can resolve to change something at any time of year ! Happy New Year to you Britta and I wish you good health, and many happy times in 2025. Lots of love. XXXX

    1. Dear Jackie, maybe it is a fixed point to make them - though of course we seldom do it on that exact date: to much to do preparing the feast. Yet in the more silent days of winter there is a time to draw a sort of overview, a summary, what have I done this year, what are my goals for the next? As I write diary of course "I keep book".
I wish you a happy new year, dear Jackie, and that we hear more of you! Lots of love, Britta xxxxx

  6. Not sure if I've commented before...I was a friend of Geo, from Trainrides....blog. He passed about a year ago.
I lived in Bavaria also, a few years back. The northern part, in Bad Kissingen. I miss it, the food, the bakeries esp, and the taciturn people. My youngest daughter and I lived there while I worked at a offshoot of our company in Oberthulba.
Hope you're well, and the new year is less awful than I imagine, at least here in the states, with our new autocrat.

  7. Dear Mike, thank you for your comment!
I noticed your alias 'Should Fish More' before because it is a statement :-)
Yes, I miss Geo. so much! His blog was so inspiring, and I saw him as a soulmate.
Interesting: Bad Kissingen I visited a few months ago - out of sheer curiosity: I had always wondered at the lopsided tower I saw from the train window on my trips to Munich.
By my job I lived in many federated states in Germany - Bavaria is very beautiful. And has a remarkable profile - very contrasting to Berlin which I love too.
I join in your wishes for the new year - in every way.
    Britta

  8. I am so sorry to self-advertise, but my latest post is called "Migrants welcome to Australia - Bonegilla". My bloody blog is still showing my last post :(
Unbelievably, the world has learned very little about bringing families together via migration.
