Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

Going to Vienna and Eating a Sacher-Torte (the original)

Mind, Dear You: I didn't write "for" eating a Sacher-Torte.

As you might have noticed, sometimes I have to fight with English grammar and jesters as "for / of / and with" - but I hope that you didn't believe for a second that Yours Truly goes to Vienna with the single intent to eat an original Sacher-Torte - that would be "too much" of snobbishness.

For a while I thought about publishing that photo at all - I sit so crumpled that I can hear my late blue-blooded grandmother hiss: "Posture, girl, posture!" (She was oh so right). My red-blooded granny (note the difference in loving feelings) only would say: "Enjoy!

Which I did.

And next time I'll write about the intellectual pleasures of Vienna. (After having polished off the whipped cream...)

  1. I think it would be perfectly normal to travel to Vienna to eat a Sacher-Torte. If you have the desire and the finances to do it then do it. I look forward to seeing the other things Vienna has to offer.

    1. Dear Emma, Vienna is too far away for me to go there only for a piece of cake - but to go there for seeing all the beautiful places and buildings was a wonderful holiday.

    1. Thank you, Rachel, for your kind words. I was happy - fine weather, a beautiful city and a lovely cake in nice company - who could ask for more?

  3. I hope you ordered the low fat and low sugar torte. It's a very nice photo btw.

    1. Thank you, Andrew!
And: low fat decidedly NOT, dear Andrew! Because I sometimes work as a silver model for fur & leather fashion, I have to keep my weight - so I eat healthy (omnivore). But low fat or sugar substitutes are not healthy - thus I enjoy real treats (cake, whipped cream) as what they should be: a treat, not a custom :-)

  4. I see you used your napkin on your lips, so granny is less unhappy. And you had a very nice time.

    1. Hahaha, dear Joanne: you got it - I don't leave my flat without my trade mark since almost 30 years - the bright pink lipstick. It brightens up almost any dark mood - and as I am fully "biodynamic" (so no Botox, surgery or Whatsoever for me) I use a bit of paint. :-)

  5. Dear Britta - love Vienna with its beautiful buildings, art galleries, parks etc, but also its classy cafe-patisseries.
That's a huge slice of Sacher-Torte - did you manage it all, or did you pop some in your bag for later.

  6. Dear Rosemary - you are right: I couldn't eat it all. But though I nowadays I sometimes ask for wrapping it up in paper (in Bavaria they have enormous slices!) I didn't do that here - too mighty, I couldn't think that I would enjoy it later the same day. :-)
The Flying Dutchman had no problems with his slice: Dutch eat a lot of sweets, I notice.

  7. I know of some people who would travel halfway round the world for a certain cake. You won't get fat Britta!

    1. Thank you, Tom - I might walk some miles for a cake! (One day in Vienna my fitness watch counted over 16.000 steps :-)

  8. The last time I spent a week in Vienna, I was already overweight and feared putting on some more kilos. So we limited ourselves to one espresso each and a slice of torte between two of us each afternoon. Blissful.

But your intellectual pleasures of Vienna post will be better for my hips :)

    1. Dear Helen, I would like to spend a week with you in Vienna - you know so much about architecture and history - then all those buildings would come to life, while when I visit them I am only enthusiastically cry:ing "Beautiful!" "Extraordinary!"
Of course I read a bit before going there - but that are only little dashes of colour.
So maybe you are right: my presentation will put no heavy weight on intellectual hips :-)
(The only exception: parts and gardens - THERE I could "bore for England")

  9. You know, I don't have a sweet tooth, and unlike your omnivorous diet mine is squarely carnivorous, but I would gladly share a bit of Sacher-Torte with you :)
