Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

Summer-Luck

Dear You,

do you remember how exciting in Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice" the purchase of hats for the five sisters was? And so costly, that some years they must do with new ribbons to pep the old hat up.

Yesterday in Delft I suddenly saw the sort-of-hat I had tried to order online, twice - and every time it was "Sold out" -

here you see it on my knee (with the dress), it shows the colour better.

and it was just in that pale blue that I wanted!
Although till now I have kept my resolution not to buy new clothes this year, I became "hairsplitting": a hat is not a dress - a hat is a hat is a hat...

So I bought it - the shop assistant cried: "Oh, just the same lovely blue as in your dress!
Come to think of it: I was in Delft, famous for it's Delft blue pottery...

I am 1.78m, so: tall. Which is a good thing for such a hat: I had never imagined when I looked on the photos online that it is so big!

It is VERY helpful in this heat. What do you do to cool off a bit?

Yours Truly, Britta

  1. You look good in your dark hat, And I like the Delft blue also. I wish I could wear hats. Fat cheeks. My mother so looked forward to having a baby (me) that she had a whole collection of bonnets for me. When she would put one on me I looked like a watermelon in a bonnet.

    1. Thank you, Emma! I cannot believe, when I see your beautiful profile photo that you cannot wear hats! I think you can!
Babies must have full cheeks, so it's a different thing.
The first photo in the post does not show the colour right, that's why I added the two others: pale blue.

  2. I have a visor hat like your hat. Mine has a smaller visor and is good for playing tennis. I like yours. The larger visor and buckle make it very fashionable. Light blue sounds lovely.

  3. Dear Susan: exactly! It is a visor - a smaller ones has the advantage (at sea) not to be so unresistant to wind :-) .
Mine is great, gives shade - but sometimes I have to hold it with one hand - not so good for playing tennis... :-)

  4. Your hats are very stylish Britta. I love the visor, more than just a visor, a super visor. xx

    1. Thank you, Rachel. I do love hats very much - especially the big ones, though they are not always easy to wear against wind - (then I have to be the supervisor :-)

  5. What to do to cool of a bit. I would say: go to the Harz in Germany in an air conditioned car. Lovely temperature in the evening there. We did a hell of a lot. Last day we visited Goslar. Yesterday on the way back we stopped in Osnabrück for a while.. I was there 50 (!) years ago with my athletics club. In the middle of Holland terrible rain and hail on the way back. Here in Noord Holland no rain at all. Nice hat en leuke, mooie jurk. 1.78 and so slim! I am very jealous.

    1. Yes Guusje, I can imagine the Harz as a "cooler".
I am astonished that you had rain and hale in the middle of Holland - we still have very high temperatures here, but they say that tomorrow may come storm, then it will cool down a bit.
So you did a lot of sport? Do you do so still ?

  6. Nice hat! I need a visor - I cannot use sun glasses without one.

    1. Thank you, Tom! I use sunglasses too, but hate them when I want to enter a room and have them on my head, slipping...
I found out: people accept a mask, (men seem even to enjoy them to flirt), - but a mask with sunglasses is too much for most people - seeing no facial expression can make them aggressive.
