Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

Sunday 2 September 2012

'A little premature, isn't it?'

Dear YOU,
as you know, one of my favourite sentences is: "I could not resist!".
As dear Oscar (Wilde) said: "The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it", or was it: "I can resist everything but temptation" - or was it both? Anyhow: I am in good company and think: Then why should I?
So you get my first letter already in September. And, innocence pure: I could not resist this little find on the Flohmarkt Tiergarten: such a nice perpetual calendar!

It is from the Thirties, and functions (and is so much easier to handle than my new Samsung Galaxy S III - but that is another story).
Now I look at it and know: "AH! Today is Sunday, September 2nd." (Till now I wasn't always sure).
And you know what? As I can memorize all shades of colours, not only fifty shades of grey, to the exact nuance, I always find things that match the ones I already posses. Look:

They match perfectly!
Your happy friend

Britta

    1. Dear Janet,
thank you! It was love at first sight and only needed a little polishing to sparkle.

  3. Dear Britta:
We, of course, love writing and receiving letters. However, the Hungarian postal service does not always manage to deliver them on time........or ever!!!

What a treasure your perpetual calendar is. It must have known that it had a colour matched companion ready and waiting!

  4. Dear Jane and Lance,
yes: the postman is no longer what he was :-) Here in Germany they don't come on Monday any more - though Once Upon A Time they even came twice a day.
The rose coloured enamel of the calendar has a hue of very faint brown - so it is not kitschig, but 'edel', as we say - in Britain one says 'posh', I think. Normally the things of the the Thirties are gone very quick - but in time of cell-phones, who needs a calendar? Except me. I do.
And sometimes it is very difficult to distinguish between objects from the Thirties and the Fifties - but here the font of the Day seems to be an indicator. (As I am not a collector it is all the same to me).

  5. Dear Britta
Both the calendar and lamp are lovely and I would love something that so clearly told me what date it was.
I hope your weekend was enjoyable, we had beautiful sunny weather for a change in Melbourne, perfect timing for the start of Spring and the garden is bursting with happiness!

    1. Dear Penny,
I love the design too - I mixed it with other things, that is always nice. Our weekend was very interesting - I'll write a short letter about it.
To imagine that in Melbourne Spring starts: wonderful! We are on the threshhold to Autumn - which shows that one has to look at things from many angles... and I'm glad to know that a person in Australia whom I appreciate very much is entering Spring now too.

    2. Penny, I don't find your blog-address (I want to add it to this blog-roll - as I do with all followers.)
      So please tell me!

  6. Ah, you have beat me to the punch in reinvention, but this is no surprise, I must say! We must, must, get to Berlin--I hope you will stay long enough there to show us around! Meantime, I am amazed at your ability to remember color in this way. I, myself, remember nothing at all with such clarity!

  7. Dear Sue,
in blogland I really needed some change - but in Berlin we will stay, (I hope, at least until grandchildren will come - then it might be Munich). So you both have a long time to visit us - and we would be very, very glad!! (See: I met an unknown facebook-friend in London, and a lot of Facebookfrieds from all-over Germany here).
To remember things (almost) like a photograph is good, but sometimes not: I cannot get rid of pictures I don't like - so I am very anxious to choose what I look at (no Horror-films, no really ugly scenes - though I do look at crime-series on TV)

    1. Sue,
shall I wait till you have the new outfit for Pufrock before I set you on my blog-roll? Will it be the same title?

    2. I am honored! My plan is to put up the first post tomorrow, so might as well wait. Moving to Wordpress, so no doubt this will cause complications. But as I think we both say, change is good!

  8. Oh they really match perfectly! I've always thought that you are very observant and have a gift of describing lovely things in a casual way. Have fun in this new journey!

    1. Dear Sapphire,
the postman threw your letter - as well as Minerva's - into the letterbox of my neighbour - sorry for that! I am glad that you are following me now on this journey!

  9. I LOVE this calendar and your new blog. (And that Hermes scarf peeking out in your photo). I have never been to Berlin, how remiss of me! Must visit one day and in the meantime will enjoy your tales of adventures in that wonderful city.

    1. Dear Minerva,
thank you! The scarf should give that old letter-paper a fresh (pink) pep - it is my third attempt at the layout.
I love Berlin very much - it is so wide and open (in many aspects), and it is definitely worth a travel.
