Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

Pink Puschel-Mania

I think the English word is "pom pom" - but "Puschel" is how we call it - and which is at the moment the most cherished word of the triplets.
Never in my life I had dreamed that I would wear a cap with a pom pom. (You can remove it by a big snap fastener).
When I went to Berlin for Christmas I promised to send photos to the Little Ones - so you see the Pink Puschel standing in front of the Literatur Café, in front of the Charlottenburger Schloss, the manor house in Britz - and so on. They loved it.

And then I had an idea. I went into a fur-shop in Berlin and luckily found "it" - three beautiful very-pink-Puschels for the triplets. They are so delighted!

  1. I only had brothers and sons, and never saw anything pink or fluffy until the day my first grand daughter was born! There is something so life-affirming about puffy pom poms, and the pink reminds me of the colour of babies' bottoms.

    1. Dear Helen, yes, pink was for a long time definitely the colour for girls (I remember "Legally Blonde" which I still can watch with amusement).
I also have "only" a son, thus am constantly surprised by three little girls.
Soft pink is is a great flatterer for an older woman - but as an artist/architect you know the force of colours better than I.

    1. Thank you, Rachel! I decidedly stop at wearing rose-coloured glasses (tried it once, but thought it horrible).
Yet my outlook on the world might be wearing them :-) xxx

  3. Puschel is a wonderful word. I resolve to find an opportunity to use it. I also used to like "fluff" but I don't think it sounds as good in German.

    1. I love that word too, Tasker - as well as the adjective "puschelig" (Googles' autocorrection instantly change it to "kuschelig", which means "cuddly", not terribly wrong either). Maybe "puschelig" invokes sensation and form in one.

  4. You mean you have the choice of taking off the puschel but opt for leaving it on? Oh, I see. You just want to amuse the triplets.

    1. Yes - when I dare to come without it, they cry: "Kein Puschel!!!" - then add: "Maybe in the study?" where they saw it once.
Yes, I want to amuse them - so they are allowed to touch and one takes the whole cap WITH the Puschel and wear it in a most becoming way (though often she pulls the wool over her eyes :-)

  5. You can get gorgeous pompoms these days, but pretty in pink is definitely the way to go.

  6. Britta you look fabulous - love the hooded coat, and a knitted hat with a snap-on/off pom pom is a great idea!
I know the triplets will have fun with the pom pom flamingoes - adorable.
Happy New Year to you, your family and loved ones. Hoping 2022 will be a better year for us all.

    1. Thank you, Mary - I only use that coat when in Berlin the eastern cold freezes me - in Berlin you can easily be "overdressed", though I do not care :-). I love big hats and nice caps and wear them often.
The flamingoes were received with utter joy - with triplets of their age it is best to buy exactly the same (also colour) for everyone - though the girls themselves differ very much.
I wish you and your family a Happy New Year too, Mary - and yes, we are all so tired (though happy to be vaccinated) of Covid.... and hope for a "normal" year in 2022.
      Britta x

    2. Coloured hats are terrific. They protect against light rain or excessive sunshine, AND add a dash of high fashion.

  7. You look brilliant Britta …… a very stylish way to keep warm and very versatile that it can be unclipped … and the flamingos will be a great hit with the triplets. Wishing you and yours a wonderful ( & stylish ) 2022 XXXX

    1. Thank you, Jackie! The unclipping is useful when it starts to rain or snow - because to protect a pompom of that size is difficult under a hood!
I know that you are a very stylish woman - so let's hope that 2022 allows us to become fashionable and visible once again :-) , and have the possibility to travel and discover. XXXX

  8. Very fetching, Britta, and bonus points for triplet amusing-ness! And I, too, have only recently realised that a soft pink can play nicely as we, ahem, mature. My younger self would have been once scornful of such a notion :) Your location looks beautiful, too - a café, you say?

    1. Thank you, Pip! (I am still happy that a person with that name stepped out of literature).
I love to be with children and young people - one reason is their ability to laugh and see the funny side of life, while so many grown-ups are engaged in "The Importance of being Earnest".
My younger self would have sniggered at "mature" or "ripened" (as I sometimes call it) - yet it was clever enough to collect even at that blooming time role models.
The location is "Schloss Britz" - the only exhibition we visited around Christmas.

  9. Your new hat looks very fetching. The pink pom pom is soft pink and lovely with your long white coat. Little girls bring such joy and they often love pink...the triplets must have been over-the-moon with their fluffy pink flamingos.

    1. Thank you, Susan! Yes, it is the soft pink that makes it nice - imagine one of the flamingos in their flamboyant pink sitting on my head! :-)
The comfort of a long coat in harsh winter times (in Berlin we call it the "Russian whip") is not to be underestimated. And though one might melt into a landscape with snow it is very practical on dark days: drivers and the ruthless cyclists can see you.

    1. Dear Joanne, I am so happy to see you back in bogland! I often thought of you, and though I know that your health still is not fully recovered you are THERE, and that is bliss!
I try to be a good grandma - that must suffice, because they are lucky to have two: the "Oma" and "Nana (me)" - a pleasable new role in my life.

  11. There is a lady who makes fancy hats near where i live in Wales and she sells ones with detachable pom poms. I bought one for Jane a while ago. They are lovely actually and great for snowy days in the alps.

  12. Beautiful outfit Britta. Lovely coat and muts and handbag.
You are back in Bavaria now I suppose? Your triplets are very lucky to have such a devoted nana.
I was just thinking I have only known 1 set of triplets in my life.
When I was a child living in Haarlem: two girls and a boy.
