Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

Back in Berlin Again - for a while...

This photo of the ground in front of an old (now renovated) beautiful cinema in Berlin I took a week ago - as you see: the design is clearly Fifty's.

To me it is a symbol of my life: hopping around from place to place: much fun, but also: no roots. Arcadian life in Bavaria - Rush Hour in The City.

Both interesting.

When we arrived here last week (No Italy !!! - we had to change plans and spent a week in Bavaria, and then a week in Berlin) - it was still raining - but now we have beautiful weather (for a while).

Instead of Florence there was Berlin, instead of Tuscany we visited Brandenburg - hahaha. (But that was nice too).

The Flying Dutchman sits in his car now, heading back to the Netherlands, and I will spend another 10 days here - then hurry back to my grandchildren, the triplets, who just became 2 years old.

PS: There is Life again in Berlin - but still far away from Rush Hour...

  1. Hopping around from place to place is inevitable during a pandemic: some places are in total lockdown and other places are relatively open to both landsmen and outside tourists. But if you are already in a car or train, you can still have a great time, just getting away from home.

The last time Joe and I visited Berlin, we spent a fortnight in the city, as well as Dresden and Leipzig, having a wonderful time. I didn't want to go home.

    1. Dear Helen, yes, the pandemic - but beyond that hopping from Berlin to Bavaria and back is now a constant feature in my life - triplets (family), culture&friends and me (Berlin), and the Netherlands - and I really do enjoy that, but when I was 40 I had another concept of getting older :-)
      (Not that I complain).

I am glad that you liked Berlin - it is such a big city with very different aspects of character, almost a cumulation of many towns. And yes: Leipzig and Dresden are worth a long stay too!

  3. Strange - I have just been writing about Florence and Italy. Travel is a bit difficult at the moment. I hope it improves soon.

    1. I just read your post and learned something new about cappuccino!
Sitting in a café watching people is so lovely - just looking and seeing and noticing.
And being a woman I conclude that I am allowed a cappuccino - and otherwise I do not care and drink it as often as I want it :-)
Wonderful to cherish a few sunny days!

  5. When I read of flooding in Germany I hoped that you were not affected. Your triplets have to be a handful. It is good of you to help with them as you enjoy them.

    1. Yes, Emma, the flooding was a near escape - 3 kilometres further there were many people afflicted and are still shocked.
Triplets really are "a handful" :-) - but I have to say that the purest bliss in the last two years came from them (of course exhaustion too). They make my heart sing!

    1. Ja, Guusje - dat klopt! :-) En nu is Nederland totaal orange - hartelijk gefeliciteerd !
And where are you in Germany? It sounds very good, the tropical paradise. Could be the one very near to Berlin?

  7. I envy your travels. Moving about between Berlin, Bavaria and the Netherlands sounds marvelous. Pandemic and floods, yet you manage to travel with ease... I'm impressed.

    1. Thank you, Susan, to remind me to be very thankful (which I very often am) - you are so right! By train or by car - travelling is fine.
Though one thing is strange: I tried to organise the kitchen in Bavaria a bit like the one in Berlin - and then there is the moment after returning where I have to THINK: where did I put the espresso cups here? Where is the sugar? (although I have it in Berlin since more than 8 years at the same place... one second I am "out of touch")

  8. Good to hear from you, dear Britta! It sounds like you've been having a wonderful time. Happy Birthday to the triplets and bon voyage to the Dutchman!

Did I spy "Dune" on the billboard of your cinema? I must say that terrazzo is rather space age! We have a lot of it in this country but whimsical design petered out by the 50s and it became more of a bland functional surface for public spaces. The eye-catching vintage examples I can think of date from the 20s and 30s, mostly.

    1. Thank you, Pipistrello - I am always overwhelmed that the blogger friends are so generous and do not reproach me for not writing regularly (that I cannot do at the moment).
It is still easy to find gifts for the triplets - though sometimes it happens that a store has only two specimen of a toy - of course then I cannot buy it :-)

With "Dune" I think you are right - my plan is I to go the cinema the coming week - for the first time over a year... (I am so glad that 3 years ago I had a season ticket for the cinema which allowed me to go any day of the year to see any movie in 16 (!) cinemas as often (!) as I wanted!! I used it very, very often)

Berlin has quite a few fine Fifty buildings - might show a few photos of that soon. Normally one cannot see the floor in front of the cinema so clearly - often a red carpet is covering it. .

  9. Belated Happy Birthday to your lovely triplets Britta.
That attractive terrazzo flooring brings to my mind the designs of Robin and Lucienne Day. They were a married couple who were at the cutting edge of the new wave of designs in the early 1950s.

    1. Thank you, Rosemary! I think so often of you in Bavaria, when I find a special plant or flower!
I will have to look up Robin and Lucienne Day - some design of the Fifties I love very much - though some other is awful. And those towns like Kassel or also Hildesheim were almost totally destroyed after the war, and then built up in Fifty style. And later they were so eager to change that for often more horrible Eighties architecture - well, nowadays there is a market for collectors of Fifty things.

  10. I think a lot of people went back to work yesterday after working from home so it’s getting busier and back to some normality in London..
Happy, happy 2nd birthday triplets. XXXX

    1. Dear Jackie, I am glad to hear that - a lonely city is quite weird!

Yesterday I was in the "Eastern part" of Berlin, where a lot of young people live - it was so normal and fun: cafés open, many people, laughter in the air - lots of little cafés, alternative ways of living in the new Mauerpark - it was a real fountain of youth! XXXX
