Britta's Letters from her life divided between city-life in German's capital Berlin and life in a Bavarian village

Haircutters and Political Mutants

Hahaha: the BZ (= Berlin Newspaper) is sort of equivalent of The Sun. Gossip and "sensations" - like our infamous BILD Zeitung, horror, but often amusing headers.

Here they title:

"Berlin Hairdresser continues cutting during Lockdown.

                     Policemen among his customers!

                    Appointments via Dating-App!"

In Germany the haircutters are not allowed to work during lockdown - so you see many lopsided self-cut fringes, striking white streaks amid the parting of deep black hair etc.

The Germans are very angry to see many of our politicians mysteriously immaculately coiffed - although they should look like this by now:

1: "Open the hair salons!

2: More and more mutations in Germany!"

(If you know some of these politicians, but not the mutants, here they are: first our Minister of Health, Jens Spahn, third chancellor Merkel, last Bavarian governor Söder)

  1. Quite right! In 2020, our hair dressers etc were closed down for a very long time during the pandemic. So we too saw many lopsided self-cut fringes, or colour coverage rapidly fading.

I wonder if the gym instructors say the same thing about bulging bums and thighs during the lockdown.

    1. So the hair dresser are open again in your country? Here they suffer by the lockdown as the caterers, actors, artists and many small shopkeepers.
And the gym instructors - we all miss their services badly!

    2. Britta

we in Australia had five months of total lockdown last year, and as a result, there has been NO Covid death since last October. I didn't see my grandchildren for 5 long months, but at least we can go to the hairdressers, coffee shops and gyms again.

    3. Wow, you are lucky (and disciplined) to have such results! Here we jump in and off lockdown, and the results are - all in all - 60.000 death through Corona.
      Awful.
I can feel with you for not being able to see your grandchildren so long! My friend in Hamburg is of course not allowed to visit her sons, both with children. And I haven't seen my grandchildren, triplets, since February 2020 - but I have a plan now, which gives me hope.

  2. That made me laugh despite shivering due to covid jab.

    1. I am glad that I could make you laugh - and do hope you feel better now recovering from the covid jab! Now you are protected.
Here in Germany we have a huge chaos concerning the vaccine (it is not very much there). Stay healthy!

  3. Boris Johnson has always looked like that.

    1. I always thought that he needs much time to get such a nonchalant look ("casual" most often is a lot of toil invested).

  4. Yes Britta BJ has always looked like that. I saw a picture when he was a little boy (a little scruff bag). But he has a certain charm, I don 't know what it is.And he is much better dressed nowadays.
How is everything in Berlin? Not much fun here in Holland. It will be weeks before we will have our vaccination. Some of my friends dob't even bother to have one.

    1. I will look those pictures up in the Internet. Maybe the charge is that this hair makes him boy-ish?
In Berlin we have not much fun either - on January 14th they thought about getting us under their thumb - meaning: not to allow us moving in more than a 15 km radius around Berlin. (But Berlin is huge, as you know). All depends on the 7 days-incident of over 200 -- but while I try to find out if we have had it now OR NOT - I get so angry: it is so typical for the very bad information we citizens get that it is not easy to say if we have had that order or not!
Today incidents between 81 to 49 in the different parts of Berlin.

  5. I fail to see why people find hair funny or worthy of talking about and it is not just the tabloids. It gets a good coverage by bloggers who have little of constructive observation about politics so they resort to hair mocking. I know people who have fine, flyaway hair, and I also know that it is very difficult to manage at the best of times.

    1. I can see the fun - though of course we are 'not amused' when we all look more or less like little scruff bags, as Guusje put it - and those who ordered it - the politicians - are well coiffured. We have a German proverb that says: "Preaching water, while drinking wine".

  6. I have not had a hair cut in a year. I can't stand it! Genetically I am fortunate. I am almost 74 and still have little gray in my hair. Otherwise Clairol would probably be a good friend.

    1. Dear Emma, I love long hair - and you can be very glad that yours stayed naturally dark!
When my hair turned from blonde-gold to lighter silver, I kept it like that, and my hairdresser refused to change it anyway (honestly!)

  7. In the USA there is a saying: "Do as I say, not as I do." Some people have one standard for themselves and another for everyone else. Ultimately: "Actions speak loudly."

    1. Thank you, Susan - I like your way to express it! Your second one we have in a similar version: "Deeds count, not words".

  8. I recognized Ms. Merkle at once. In my state, haircutting is permitted.

  9. Wow - that is not easy to recognise her outside Europe!
Here flower shops for instance are closed (now they sell in front of their store) - also little boutiques. We should not be attracted by a beautiful scarf - they want us to stay home.
(And haircutters come too near, even with a mask - but dentists, of course, are allowed.)

  10. Dear Britta - hairdressers in the UK are not open either. Last week a Brazilian footballer who plays for Newcastle United in the premier league showed a photo of himself getting a hair cut on his Instagram!!! The police were quickly notified and both he and the hairdresser were fined.

    1. Well - that was a quick reaction - for a not very clever deed of the vain football player! I One gets the impression that some people think: "I am rich" or "I am famous" - "so I stand above the law".
And in a way they are (in case of minor offences): The fine might have been less impoverishing for the footballer?

  12. Luckily I only require haircutting in two areas; the sides and the back. The top part looks after itself.
